Dynamics 365: Microsoft Dynamics Financial Reporting

Dynamics 365: Microsoft Dynamics Financial Reporting

With the recent release of Dynamics 365 Business Edition or what is also called Dynamics 365 for Financials, I’ve received quite a few questions from current Dynamics NAV clients about what that means for them. Thankfully, it’s all good news, but you wouldn’t necessarily understand that from the Microsoft press releases.

Dynamics 365 for Financials

First let me explain what Dynamics 365 for Financials actually is. Dynamics 365 for Financials is a cloud ERP product from Microsoft that is targeted towards companies that want a completely web-based solution, and don’t have any unique requirements that would require client specific customizations.

Dynamics 365 for Financials shares the same code base as the latest release of NAV, Dynamics NAV 2017, with some very specific restrictions. Dynamics 365 for Financials only uses the NAV Web Client and not the Windows Client. It also does not include Manufacturing, Service Management, or all Warehousing functionality available from NAV. While certain NAV functionality is not made available for Dynamics 365 for Financials, partners and ISVs can take advantage of the new App Source market place to build Apps based on that restricted functionality.

Impact of Dynamics 365 for Financials on existing NAV clients?

So the big question is why should this matter or how does it affect existing NAV clients?  The key is that NAV and Dynamics 365 for Financials share the same code base, and Microsoft has made a significant investment in building out the development team to extend both products. Whatever development helps one product helps the other, and vice versa. As a result, we should see increased functionality and ease-of-use for both products in the coming year.

As long as Microsoft continues to build both products on the same code base I only see good things for both products, and both products’ users.
