ArcherPoint Dynamics NAV Developer Digest - vol 250

The NAV community, including the ArcherPoint technical staff, is made up of developers, project managers, and consultants who are constantly communicating, with the common goal of  sharing helpful information with one another to help customers be more successful.

As they run into issues and questions, find the answers, and make new discoveries, they post them on blogs, forums, social media…so everyone can benefit. We in Marketing watch these interactions and never cease to be amazed by the creativity, dedication, and brainpower we’re so fortunate to have in this community—so we thought, wouldn’t it be great to share this great information with everyone who might not have the time to check out the multitude of resources out there? So, the ArcherPoint Microsoft Dynamics NAV Developer Digest was born. Each week, we present a collection of thoughts and findings from NAV experts and devotees around the world. We hope these insights will benefit you, too.

Lifecycle Services – July 2019

Suresh shares the July 2019 Release 1 Release Notes from the Lifecycle Services Team. In this release, there are configure updates for ONE version, as well a new update experience and a new feature called Project Onboarding.

Microsoft Partner Updates

The Microsoft partner community is abuzz with talk about the changes Microsoft is making to its partner programs and requirements. With the intent to eliminate Internal Use Rights licensing, a new mandatory requirement to purchase advanced support, and sharing of ISV revenue with Microsoft, the general consensus is that Microsoft is favoring quality partners (translation: larger) over quantity. Check out Steve Mordue’s post, Microsoft to Partners, “The Free Rides are Over!”.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV and 365 Business Central Cumulative Updates

Suresh shares this list of released cumulative updates for supported Dynamics NAV and D365BC versions:

Kyle notes: “BC14 on premises is on some other sort of schedule. They released CU1 at the end of May but haven’t released CU2 yet.”

Where to Put Validation Logic for a Custom Field?

Kyle: “I have an AL design question. If I have a table extension for a base table that adds a custom field, and then an event subscriber codeunit for that same table, where should I put the validation logic for that custom field?”

Suresh offers: “If the validation is only 2 or 3 lines, I would add that as part of the table extension. If it is more, then I would create a new subscriber codeunit for the table extension and add into it.”

Matt Street suggests: “I would just put all related functionality in the table extension.”

Matt Traxinger adds: “I prefer the classic MVC pattern: Model = Table, View = Page, Controller = Codeunit. I wouldn’t do an event subscriber but definitely a callout to a codeunit/controller. It’s all just a matter of preference, though.”

Matt Street concludes: “Typically, validation and ‘this’ operations are part of the model, where control is typically process/transactional. A Classes behavior that should be honored across all control pieces should be in the model.”
