Recommended AL coding practices
Krzysztof Bialowas (“Kris”) at MyNavBlog.com offers a series of BC development tips and good practices that are always good to keep top of mind. He suggests basic coding hygiene, like:
- Never hardcode anything in AL…even the error messages.
- Use triggers in the proper places.
- Keep the code simple.
- Maintain naming conventions for variables.

Finally, Microsoft is taking out the trash!
For years (since version 14), Microsoft has been deprecating schema elements (tables and fields) but not removing them from the database. This was done to “preserve backwards compatibility and enable a more seamless transition for our customers to the latest versions on-premises and online.” The accumulated schema elements add complexity and prevent reusing obsolete object and field IDs.
So, Microsoft has announced that they will start cleaning up the schemas that have been marked as “ObsoleteState = Removed”, beginning with version 26 (2025 Wave 1) in April 2025. This means that 2024 Wave 2 (version 25) “will be the last one to support a direct upgrade from the hybrid version 14.”
