Dynamics Business Central / NAV Developer Digest - Vol. 546

ArcherPoint by Cherry Bekaert’s Developer Digest focuses on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV development. This week’s volume includes tips on upgrading from Business Central on-premises to SaaS, breaking down GitHub’s chat modes, using Claude Code to access the BC MCP Server, and open source BC escape rooms.
The Dynamics 365 Business Central community, consisting of developers, project managers, and consultants, collaborates across various platforms to share valuable insights. At ArcherPoint, we greatly value their dedication and expertise. To ensure widespread access to this technical knowledge, we created Developer Digest.
New wine in old wineskins
When upgrading from on-premises Business Central to SaaS, many customers tend to continue business-as-usual. They try to recreate their Business Central customizations, rebuild hard-coded business logic, and essentially run the SaaS version as another on-prem installation.
Stefano Demiliani discusses this issue at length, summarizing the problem as:
“The solution is not choosing on-premises or SaaS. It’s about choosing a governance and operational model that aligns with the platform architecture. SaaS platforms like Business Central deliver maximum value when treated as continuous, managed services. Applying on-premises rigor creates the worst of both worlds: SaaS pricing with on-premises cost and complexity.”

Breaking down GitHub’s chat modes
GitHub offers several unique chat modes:
- Autocomplete Mode
- Ask Mode
- Edit Mode
- Plan Mode
- Agent Mode
Tonya Bricco-Meske explains how each of these chat modes behaves and when they should be used. She also offers a good introduction to getting started with them.

Using Claude Code to access the BC MCP Server
The Business Central MCP Server enables MCP-based connectivity via API pages and supports advanced scenarios, agent design, and flexible configurations.
Volodymyr Dvernytskyi provides a thorough explanation of how to configure the BC MCP Server, then use a proxy server to connect Claude Code to Business Central via the MCP.

Open source BC escape rooms
A while back, Waldo responded to Microsoft’s initiatives to address the shortage of Business Central talent with his concept of BC Escape Rooms.
Recently, he announced that the framework for the Escape Room concept is now available. This will allow users to build their own rooms and puzzles that can be used to train BC newcomers.
