Different Approaches to Migrating from Dynamics GP to Business Central

There are several ways to transition from Dynamics GP to Business Central. Based on over 20 years of implementation experience, I’ll outline the methods I’ve seen in practice — along with some candid insights.
You may have come across programs promising Dynamics GP to Business Central migration in as little as one week. In certain situations, these can work — but only for a small subset of GP environments, and typically with limitations.
Most rapid migration tools focus on converting master data, such as the chart of accounts, customers, vendors, and items, into a new Business Central company. GP classes are mapped to posting groups in Business Central. For organizations running relatively straightforward GL, AP, and AR processes, this approach can get you operational quickly.
However, what you gain in speed, you often sacrifice in optimization.
Why Dynamics GP and Business Central Are Fundamentally Different Systems
Business Central is not “GP in the cloud.” While both are Microsoft products, they are fundamentally different systems.
Take the chart of accounts as an example. Dynamics GP uses segmented account structures — a traditional design. Business Central, on the other hand, leverages dimensions, offering significantly more flexibility and analytical capability. Simply converting segments into a similar structure in BC misses the opportunity to redesign your financial framework for scalability and future growth.
The same applies to posting setup and master data. Posting groups in Business Central require thoughtful configuration. Customer, vendor, and item records should be reviewed and cleansed before migration. There is little value in carrying obsolete or poorly structured data into a modern ERP system.
User Adoption Is a Critical Part of Any GP to Business Central Migration
Another critical consideration is user adoption. Business Central is a different system with different workflows and concepts. Expecting an accounting team to fully adapt to a new ERP platform within a week is optimistic at best.
Technology implementation is not just about data migration — it’s about process alignment, configuration, and user readiness.
My Recommendation: Don’t Sacrifice Strategy for Speed
In my experience helping GP users migrate to Business Central, I generally advise against one-week “instant migration” programs unless the organization has very simple requirements and understands the trade-offs involved.
A more effective approach balances speed with strategic redesign — allowing you to reimagine your ERP structure while building a scalable and future-proof foundation.
In my next article, I’ll outline a practical, quick-start strategy followed by a structured, full implementation roadmap that positions your Business Central investment for long-term success.
