Dynamics Business Central / NAV Developer Digest - Vol. 537

ArcherPoint’s Developer Digest focuses on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV development. This week’s volume includes managing Application and Platform hotfixes on cloud platforms, MCP and GitHub Copilot integration, autodiscovery of MCP servers, and adding countries to BC using a RESTful API.

The Dynamics 365 Business Central community, consisting of developers, project managers, and consultants, collaborates across various platforms to share valuable insights. At ArcherPoint, we greatly value their dedication and expertise. To ensure widespread access to this technical knowledge, we created Developer Digest.

Sorry to bother you, but…

Microsoft applies Application and Platform hotfixes on its cloud platforms. While Application hotfixes follow the update window in the Tenant Admin Center (TAC), Platform hotfixes might not. When it updates the platform, Microsoft will send a message through the UI beginning with, “Sorry to bother you, but…”

Unfortunately, background sessions and web services will not see a message sent through the UI.

Duilio Tacconi breaks down this problem and offers a solution in his blog, How to choose the best Update Window in Dynamics 365 Business Central Online.

MCP and GitHub Copilot integration

We discussed using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) with Business Central a few weeks ago in Dev Digest 535.

Adding to that discussion, Saurav Dhyani discusses using MCP GitHub Copilot integration in Business Central. In his video, Saurav explains how to enable AL development with Copilot, how to set up a local MCP server, and offers real-world use case examples.

Autodiscovery of MCP servers

In a related topic, Visual Studio Code allows autodiscovery of MCP servers installed on your local machine. You can import MCP configurations from Claude, Cursor, and Windsurf tools.

This setting is enabled by default. If enabled, it will import any new MCP server configurations into your VS code.

However, having a multitude of MCP servers installed in an AI tool might not be the optimal solution. Stefano Demiliani recommends only using the MCP servers that you need.

Adding countries to BC using a RESTful API

Sometimes, it’s easier to write a software routine to automatically import data than it is to enter it manually. Certainly, it is much more versatile in the long run.

Erik Hougaard demonstrates this technique to add countries to Business Central. In the process, he found that the Kronos country table comes with fewer countries than Business Central can support.
