The Risks and Rewards of Upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central: What Decision Makers Need to Know
Risk doesn’t bother me; I’m more passionate about the payout. People say I think outside the box. I don’t actually like that term. From my perspective, I’m simply not only looking at the easily measured, tangible metrics to make decisions, but I’m also observing the intangible. These are metrics that either some believe are non-measurable or are just too complicated and costly to measure with any degree of accuracy, thus requiring creative observation to find patterns that are otherwise “outside the box” and ignored.
So, I observe the tangible and the intangible. Also, the surer I am of a decision’s potential output, the more I double down on the execution. For example, at ArcherPoint, we used to charge for upgrade estimates. One day, I had an epiphany that this process of charging a customer just to let them know how much an upgrade costs seems off.
I’m not a sales guy (most days), but I imagined going into a restaurant and having to pay just to look at the menu. I thought, that would certainly reduce the number of customers who would stick around and actually order food and drinks.
So, I made my argument with my team, they outlined the risks, which were quite substantial, actually, as each estimate cost between $1K and $3K. Multiply that by the volume of customers that were paying for estimates, and the perceived increase because they’re FREE, and that sum was likely more than my annual salary.
But I persisted, and we ultimately decided to try it. It’s not like it was going to cause any long-term harm relative to the potential output.
With not much consensus and lots of trepidation, we started offering free analyses. The result? Our signed upgrade work went up more than 1.4 million dollars in just 2 months. That was actually beyond my predictions.
