In the dynamic realm of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force, promising to reshape the way developers approach their craft. Amidst the buzz and anticipation, I find myself cautiously navigating the AI landscape, particularly when it comes to tools like GitHub CoPilot, with a measured dose of skepticism. For me, it is more like a ticking timebomb of credit card debt (or, in this case, technical debt) that I worry we may never recover from.

The ideals behind products like CoPilot are undeniably noble – who wouldn’t want increased automation and efficiency in their day-to-day workflow? However, I must temper my optimism, especially considering recent studies by GitHub, CodeScene, and GitClear.

The reported 55% increase in code writing speed attributed to CoPilot raises eyebrows, leaving room for skepticism. At Directions, I think some were touting as much as 75%. Now, don’t get me wrong – the suggestions from CoPilot, or as one of my colleagues amusingly coins it, “spicy auto-complete,” are often decent. Occasionally, it even provides substantial chunks of code. Nevertheless, that skepticism remains. Can I genuinely write 500 lines of code in the time it once took me to write a mere 225? My experience so far tells me no.

But let’s entertain, for a moment, the notion of a modest reduction in time and a boost in productivity. Enter GitClear’s latest study, introducing another layer of complexity – a discernible downward trend in code quality where tools like CoPilot are in play. With over 150 million lines of code analyzed, the ominous prediction of code churn doubling to over 7% in 2024 raises serious concerns about the potential introduction of errors into production.

The upward trajectory in the prevalence of copy/paste code adds yet another layer to the narrative. While the percentage of such code is on the rise, the thoughtful integration of this work into larger projects seems conspicuously absent. AI, it appears, falters when it comes to suggesting ways to refactor code for enhanced maintainability. A study by CodeScene unveils that these suggestions hit the mark only 37% of the time – a worrying figure for Business Central developers navigating a fast-paced, adaptive environment.

Code quality, admittedly, is a subjective matter. As developers, our collective aspiration is to deliver value faster and more efficiently. The hope is that AI-assisted tools like CoPilot contribute to this vision without compromising the very essence of our craft – the quality and thoughtful construction of code. The real concern surfaces when these tools start suggesting based on their own recommendations, reminiscent of the unpredictable nature of AI image generators. What suggestions might these tools make when the very people supplying that data don’t validate its quality?

In the end, only time will unveil the true impact of AI on the development landscape. Will these tools evolve to become indispensable assets, or will they inadvertently shape a future where hasty, AI-generated solutions dominate? The journey is uncertain, and as developers, we must tread cautiously, ensuring that efficiency gains don’t come at the cost of the very essence of our craft – quality and thoughtful code.
