Dealing with the Myths and Realities of Upgrades

Dealing with the Myths and Realities of Upgrades

Taking full advantage of the most recent advances and technologies is central to any strategy for success in any field. Regardless of size, most accomplished businesses would agree with that. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case, particularly when it comes to system upgrades.

In spite of acheivements and demonstrated best practices in other areas, a number of otherwise successful businesses are slow to address upgrading the ERP system in place. Hesitation and anxiety arise from several concerns: potential disruption to business, cost, and a range of complications that can – or can’t – be foreseen.

This does not have to be the case.

Understand the Situation

One the single largest factors contributing to potential issues, and the associated concerns, is the length of time between upgrades. The potential for difficulty increases along with the time between updates. Accordingly, the business that’s been running on the same version for the past five years or more is likely to face greater challenges than the business that has upgraded on a more frequent basis.

Again, this does not have to be the case.

Understand What is not a “Problem”

Addressing misunderstandings, misinformation, or the body of myths surrounding the process makes the decision to upgrade much easier and less stressful. With Microsoft Dynamics NAV, many of these concerns are non-existent.

Specifically, concerns about database customization, size, or age of the current version lead people to believe that an upgrade will be extremely problematic if not impossible. Stories of nightmarish upgrades that resulted in catastrophes further compound these worries.

As with the previous case, taking the time to learn and understand that these concerns are not accurate alleviates a great deal of stress. This can be accomplished most effectively by seeking the assistance of professionals in the field.

Work with the Right Partner

Finding and working with the right partner makes the difference between an effective, efficient upgrade and a difficult, ambiguous process. When looking for that partner, ensure that they’re able clearly provide the following:

  • Expertise in your field
  • Experience with successful upgrades
  • Willingness to collaborate throughout the process
  • Ability to develop a plan for your success
  • Transparency throughout the process

Taking a step back, upgrading an ERP System is like buying insurance: it has to be done before it’s needed. While unknown factors may cause concerns, those concerns aren’t nearly as bad as the realities that accompany a breakdown in the system, especially if it could have been avoided.
