Dynamics Business Central / NAV Developer Digest - Vol. 507

ArcherPoint’s Developer Digest focuses on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV development. This week’s volume includes leveraging Python in Excel, sales tax for exempt clients, and BC Tip of the Day. And don’t miss out; DynamicsCon Virtual 2024 is coming on November 13!

The Dynamics 365 Business Central community, consisting of developers, project managers, and consultants, collaborates across various platforms to share valuable insights. At ArcherPoint, we greatly value their dedication and expertise. To ensure widespread access to this technical knowledge, we created Developer Digest.

Sales tax for exempt clients

Question: A client uses an ISV product to automate sales and use tax. The company has tax-exempt customers; however, when they sell certain pieces of equipment to them, they need to charge Sales Tax. The ISV product looks at the customer’s tax status (exempt or taxable), and if the customer’s status is exempt, it won’t return a sales tax amount to BC—even if the item is taxable. Is this the correct behavior?

Answer: From what you say, it seems the ISV product is in line with BC. If the sales header tax liable flag is not checked, nothing on the lines can force taxes unless the line is explicitly marked as tax liable.

BC tip of the day

This may not be new to you. But, super useful to me!

The Number formatting feature in Report Builder doesn’t work for most date values since MS renders them as text. So, if you want to convert a date value that is “March 27, 2024” to “3/27/2024”, this works:

=FormatDateTime(Fields!DocumentDate.Value, 2)

Leveraging Python in Excel

Microsoft recently added the ability to include Python in Excel simply by choosing Insert Python in a cell using the Formulas tab or entering =PY.

Developers familiar with Python can leverage this capability when exporting reports from Business Central to Excel. Python can be an especially useful tool in Excel, particularly when working with complex datasets from Business Central.

Bert Verbeek offers an example of how to utilize this workflow in his blog, Business Central, Excel and Python a good combination?
