Dynamics Business Central / NAV Developer Digest - Vol. 524

ArcherPoint’s Developer Digest focuses on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV development. This week’s volume includes previewing a file in the BC web client, preventing items from being used in production in BC, and validating report layouts in BC v26.

The Dynamics 365 Business Central community, consisting of developers, project managers, and consultants, collaborates across various platforms to share valuable insights. At ArcherPoint, we greatly value their dedication and expertise. To ensure widespread access to this technical knowledge, we created Developer Digest.

Preview a file in the BC web client

Coming in Business Central 2025 Wave 1 (version 26) will be the ability to preview a file from the web client without downloading the file first or using additional modules. This allows users to preview attachments such as PDFs, reports, and other documents without leaving the Business Central work environment.

This functionality is provided by a new method added to the File object in AL Language extension v15:

  • File.ViewFromStream – for Business Central SaaS
  • File.View – for Business Central on-premises

Stefano Demiliani explains this new functionality with example code in his blog, Dynamics 365 Business Central: previewing a file from AL.

Prevent items from being used in production in BC

Sometimes, it is necessary to prevent certain items or variants from being used in production. This might be required to improve production quality or replace discontinued components.

Coming in Business Central 2025 Wave 1, users will have the ability to block items or variants from being used in production. When an item is blocked, it will not be used in manufacturing activities.

Validate report layouts in BC v26

Report layouts control the data and format of the report contents, including the data fields used in the report as well as the placement of text and images.
In previous releases, errors in a report layout required a developer to analyze the problem and perhaps even open a support request.

New in BC v26, administrators can run the Validate Layout action themselves to get a list of errors (if any) in a report.

Another new action, Show Layout Info, displays the basic information of the selected layout.

Yun Zhu explains the new actions and offers examples in his blog, Business Central 2025 wave 1 (BC26): Validate report layouts for errors as an admin (Check report layout without running).
